The generator can either be powered by the DC power source supplied, or via the hand crank operation. 
This Van de Graaf generator is used to demonstrate the effects of static electricity.  
With the hand crank operation you can control the amount of electricity produced depending upon how hard and how long you crank. This is a true "hands on" experience for students.
